3. Woodpecker's box
This box was placed in a larch near a forest house on 15 August 1999. In 2000 and 2001 great tits had a nest. Probably not successful in 2000. Dead young were found. In 2002 the box was occupied by starlings. On 11 May 2002 calls from nestlings heard. Picture 2002. In 2003 pied flycatchers occupied the box. Picture of young. On 16 May 2006 I saw juvenile great tits. On 19 July 2009 box temporarily removed because the left screw was broken due to too much strain from the cable. The box was attached again by G. Boezewinkel. On 2 April 2010 two starlings near the box. On 17 October 2011 I removed the starling nest. In 2013 I removed a nest of great tit. Box disappeared 2015/2016. Tree was felled.
diameter entrance hole: 60 mm, floor: 16 by 14 cm, distance entrance hole-floor: 33 cm

4. Concrete box near woodpecker's box
In this tree hung a concrete nest box opposite to the forest house mentioned above. The concrete front was missing and reconstructed in 1999. The entrance hole is on the side of the front. In 2000 no bird showed interest. In 2001 a nuthatch occupied the box and narrowed the entrance hole by plastering it with mud. Nuthatch did not leave the box when it was taken down for inspection. On 20 May 2002 I saw a tit, possibly a coal tit, entering the box. I cleaned the box on 18 July 2002 and found three eggs. The entrance hole needed narrowing in 2003. In 2005 the box was occupied by a pied flycatcher. In april 2006 another entrance hole was made, probably by a woodpecker. When I wanted to change the box, I found a coal tit breeding. On 25 May 2008 blue tits were feeding. On 3 January 2009 I replaced the box by the box on the picture. On 3 April 2010 a nuthatch was mortaring the entrance hole. In 2010 the tree was felled.

5. Nest cavity in woodland behind nest box nr. 4
This is a natural cavity in a pine with a man made wooden front that was placed in winter 1999. The tree is located in coniferous woodland behind nest box nr. 4. In 2000 no bird showed interest. On 11 May 2002 I took off the front and saw young nuthatches, just a few days old. On 26 May I took off the front again and made a picture of the young nuthatches. In 2003 nuthatches occupied the box again. Hole was empty on 31 May 2003. In 2004 and 2005 nuthatches again: see picture 6 May 2005. In 2006 a great tit occupied this cavity. On 26 May 2006 I saw the young, only several days old. On 21 October 2007 I placed a new wooden front. On 25 May 2008 nuthatch were feeding. Hornets occupied the box in July-August 2008. On 10 April 2009 juvenile nuthatches heard. On 17 October 2011 I emptied the cavity and removed a mass of bark shreds. Picture of the nest without the wooden front. In October 2013 I emptied the cavity again and discovered that a woodpecker had made a hole above it. Picture.
