17.  Owl box in rest area

October 2002

December 2012

Stock doves 4 May 2015

The biggest and heaviest box built by me. This box was placed in an oak on 19 October 2002. Fitted for tawny owl, jackdaw or stock dove. Close up. Picture of the box from a different view. Picture of the preparatory works. In 2003 jackdaws occupied the box. I saw eggs on 10 May 2003. Probably the eggs were not hatched, see picture made on 31 May. On 20 October 2008 I wanted to stain the box and unscrew a plank to remove the rubbish that the jackdaws had brought in. When I had removed two planks and took a look into the box I saw a Stone Marten staring at me. When I wanted to take a better look, it jumped through the entrance hole and disappeared in the wood. Beneath the entrance hole I saw a beautiful nest of twigs. I bolted the planks and stained the box. On 1 January 2012 I discovered that the box had fallen down. The oak died and the bark let loose together with the box. On 6 December 2012 the box was placed in a beech by a JCB Loadall. The box is occupied by stock doves now. Picture 17 August 2013. On 4 May 2015 two juveniles waiting for food. In 2016 breeding probably was not succesfull. On 28 April 2016 I opened the box en removed old eggs of stock doves, 1 little dead juvenile stock dove, dead bank voles and owl pellets. Pictures: first sight, inside left, inside left clean, box open clean, box closed, roof. In 2017 jackdaws occupied the box, see picture of jackdaw on 26 April 2017. In 2019 a pair of stock dove was present again, see picture of male on 23 February 2019.
