This box, hanging very low at the edge of the wood, is usually occupied by great tits. On 11 May 2002 I opened the box and saw a nest with eggs of the pied flycatcher. On 26 May female pied flycatcher breeding. It flew away when I opened the box. Picture of the six eggs. Seeing from the picture the nest is probably covering the nest of a successfully evicted great tit. The proof of this was found on 21 June 2002: after the young had fledged, I removed the nest of the pied flycatcher and found a nest of great tit with seven eggs. In 2003 the box is occupied by great tit, see picture of the eggs on 5 May. In 2004 eight nearly fledged great tits on 3 July. In 2005 again great tits. In 2006 attempt of pied flycatcher. Remarkable large juvenile great tits on 25 May 2008. On 24 February 2014 I placed a wood cement box in the same tree as the present box is almost done. In 2017 I removed the box. |
This is an old box made by me many years ago. In 2001 it was occupied by great tits. This box is too small. However, on 31 March 2002 two blue tits showed interest. See pictures of blue tit on roof and blue tit in front of the entrance hole. In 2003 great tits occupied the box. A woodpecker made a hole in the roof and probably ate the young. Box removed. |
This was a concrete box in a lean oak tree between beeches. The box is usually occupied by blue tits. On 26 May 2002 I heard hissing inside the box when my hand covered the entrance hole to reach for a caterpillar. I did not open the box. On 5 May 2003 I saw a blue tit breeding. Picture of nearly fledged young. In 2004 the box was occupied by pied flycatcher. In 2006 I moved the box to the vicinity of boxes no's. 19 and 20, because the oak had to disappear due to redevelopment of the countryside. Beautiful blue tit nest on 5 May 2006. End 2018 box fell down because of broken branch. On 19 February 2019 I removed the box to a young oak. |
