This box, production date 23 September 2001, was placed in a small birch on 25 October 2001, very close to the ground facing the east. The main part originally was a toy sailing boat. When the front part is opened, a piece of glass protects the young tits. On 1 May 2002 I opened the front part and, to my surprise, saw a breeding great tit. On 19 and 26 May I saw young. The box disappeared in December 2002, but on 24 February 2008 I found the box again, somewhat further in the wood. On 3 April 2010 I noticed that the entrance is enlarged by a bird, possibly a nuthach. See picture. See picture of the inside. On 5 April 2010 I attached a metal plate to protect the future young. In the autumn of 2010 I removed the box for renovation. In 2011 I placed the box in a wood in Amsterdam. In 2013 it fell down due to a broken branch. On 26 February 2014 I placed the box back in the east to spend its last days there. See picture of the box with open front and the environment. In 2017 the nuthatch breeded. October 2018 box removed because of hazard of falling down. On 20 February 2019 I placed the box in the same nice area with two bolts through the inside. Detail with frontpart open. On 18 March 2020 I removed the box to a place somewhat further, see picture. |
15. Jackdaw box
This box was placed in a carport
on 22 February 2002. The front
was placed two days later. Maybe the box will be occupied by jackdaw or
stock dove. On 26 May 2006 I found this nest. In January 2008 a barn owl was spotted on top of the box. On 28 April 2016 I made a picture of the inside. Probably a nest of a squirrel. See also picture of 2 January 2018. On 11 February 2023 I looked in the box again. A barn owl flew out. The owl flew to box 21. I found him there half an hour later. He flew back. The box was full of partly disintegrated vomit balls. I removed a decent amount so that the owl has a little more space. diameter entrance hole: 12 cm floor: 43 by 43 cm |
